Fernández del Viso places great emphasis on teaching and mentoring undergraduate students as a key aspect of his academic work. His particular focus is on helping students acquire critical thinking and quantitative analysis skills that are essential or beneficial in various Biology and Ecology disciplines. Recently, he has been utilizing public databases to expand research and facilitate the teaching of critical thinking and quantitative analysis to undergraduate students.

He has expertise in functional plant ecology, specifically in areas such as leaf gas exchange and plant community structure. He has worked in both wet and dry forests and has employed a variety of research designs and methodologies.
