Edna E. Aquino obtained her certificate as a Medical Technologist in 1992 followed by a PhD in Microbiology from the MSC-UPR in 2000. She did postdoctoral studies in the area of Biochemistry and Physiology at a collaboration between UPR-RP and MSC. In 2007 obtained a certificate in Bioethics from the School of Public Health. She has currently spent 20 years as an educator in the Department of Microbiology.

research overview

Her research interest is to elucidate microbial pathogenesis, focusing on the evasion mechanisms that microorganisms use against different antibiotics to colonize, survive and subsequently cause infection in humans. Currently, she seeks to identify antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the microbiota found in human breast milk.
