Nadjah Rios Villarini was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She pursued her bachelor's degree in Literature at the University of Puerto Rico. After experiencing an existential crisis, she decided to study Linguistic Anthropology at the University of Texas in Austin, where she completed her MA and PhD in 2004. Since then, she has been working at the University of Puerto Rico, serving as a Full Professor in the Faculty of General Studies.
She has explored various academic themes over different cycles. The first focused on the migration of Puerto Ricans to Saint Croix from a linguistic perspective. The second cycle delved into the music of calypso and its connection to intracaribbean migratory movements. Lately, she considers herself a digital humanist.
