  • Wilmer O. Rivera De Jesús is originally from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. His research emphases include the conservation and rehabilitation of wetland ecosystems, vulnerable plant species, plant ecophysiology and climate change impacts in coastal ecosystems. Also, develops inter and transdisciplinary research through CURE education strategy in climate change and environmental undergraduate courses. Dr. Rivera has taught Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology and General Sciences courses. He currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences-College of General Studies, where promotes the critical thinking and the importance of science for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources. For his commitment with the community, is part of the NGO “Corredor del Yaguazo Inc”., as a Scientific Advisor, for the development of research and environmental education initiatives for the rehabilitation of the “Cienega Las Cucharillas” Natural Reserve in the municipality of Cataño. Dr. Rivera maintains a strong collaboration with the scientific and environmental education, providing curricular revisions for the Puerto Rico National Sciences Standards, of the Department of Education, and the development of workshops, talks and conferences on topics related to STEM, climate change, sustainable development and ecosystem rehabilitation to teachers and students in different academic levels. Dr. Rivera has several published articles in peer-reviewed journals and technical documents focused on effective practices for the rehabilitation and reforestation of urban wetlands under the context of climate change. Also, he promotes public policy for climate changes issues in Puerto Rico as a member of the Council of Experts and Advisors on Climate Change.
