Raúl Santiago-Bartolomei is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Planning at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras. His research lies in the intersection between political economy, urban and regional development, neighborhood change, housing, and infrastructure planning. His current work focuses on assessing long-term neighborhood change from disasters, particularly the changing trends in residential segregation, urban decay, gentrification, displacement, social mobility, and migration after Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico. Previous work includes: an examination on the changes in labor practices and housing affordability in Havana, Cuba after property and economic reforms and the arrival of short-term rentals; housing affordability and transit-oriented development in Los Angeles; and social-ecological inequities in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
