During the past 20 years, Dr. Cumba-Avilés has conducted work on instrument development and adaption, the assessment and treatment of Latino/a youth with behavioral and emotional problems and their parents, and the cultural adaptation of interventions. As a researcher, he has focused in assessing the efficacy of treatments for emotional problems in Latino youth and their caregivers, particularly among adolescents with type 1 diabetes and children who have experienced trauma. He is currently the co-director of a project aimed to assess the impact of Trauma-Focused CBT in symptoms of post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and aggressiveness among Latino/a children. His also the PI of two research projects: COVID-19 and Mental Health in Adults from Puerto Rico and Development of a Psychosocial Intervention for Parents Learning about Interpersonal Relationships, Depression, and Anxiety when Facing Diabetes in Adolescents.
