Chen's research focuses on computational studies of nanomaterials, designing new materials for energy, environment, and human health applications. He collaborates closely with experimental groups to turn theoretical predictions into reality. His recent work involves developing two-dimensional materials for various applications such as molecular electronics, nano-devices, energy production and storage, nanocatalysts for fuel cells and metal-air batteries, and sorbents for the removal of emerging pollutants from water, leveraging high-throughput computations, machine learning, and big-data techniques.
