O.J. Abelleira spent a year working in the Luquillo Experimental Forest as a research support specialist conducting research in forest productivity and canopy photosynthesis for the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). He then spent six years working for the US Forest Service while completing a M.Sc. in Biology focused on the ecology of African tulip tree forests at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras (UPR-RP). He completed his Ph.D. in Natural Resources in the University of Idaho and CATIE conducting research in water fluxes in secondary forests and tree plantations the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica.
