overview

  • Dr. Duconge is a full-time Professor of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacogenomics and the Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Programs at the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy. He has spent the last 15 years working on clinical and translational pan-omics research projects, with a particular interest in the pharmacogenomics of cardiovascular drugs in admixed Caribbean Hispanics to identify novel biomarkers of clinical relevance for decision-making as well as the use of genotypes as a covariate in developing population PK/PD modeling. He has laid the groundwork for pharmacogenomics research in Caribbean Hispanics by performing measures of admixture, genetic structure, association studies of drug response at genome-wide level and by developing new pharmacogenetic algorithms for dose predictions in this population as well as developing clinically useful polygenic models and decision-support tools that predict risks for adverse drug reactions and non-response prior to therapy. Dr. Duconge has received extensive training in genetics, molecular biology, pharmacometrics, PK/PD modeling, clinical research, and big data analysis. He is also a founder member of the Pharmacogenomics Global Research Network (PGRN) and holds active membership in different professional societies and consortiums. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications including reviews, book chapters, and research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Current active projects include 1) Adopting a Precision Medicine Paradigm in Puerto Rico: leveraging ancestral diversity to identify predictors of Clopidogrel response in Caribbean Hispanics; 2) Merging artificial intelligence (AI) and pharmacometrics to elucidate gene-drug interactions linked to clopidogrel responsiveness in Caribbean Hispanic patients; and 3) Leveraging PBPK modeling and applications to elucidate DDI and GDDIs of clinical interest. These works have been funded by grants # HL123911 and HL110393 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI); the Research Center in Minority Institutions program (RCMI) award numbers 8G12 MD007600 & 2U54 MD007600 from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD); the NICHD grant #5G11HDO46326; RCRII grant #5P20RR011126; NASA EPSCoR grant # 80NSSC19M0148, grant # 1R16 GM149372 (NIGMS), the 2023 PGRN Research Collaboration Grant and the PR Newborn Screening Program internal research and development funds.
