Errol L. Montes Pizarro is a native of Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University. He works as a professor of mathematics and at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Puerto Rico in Cayey. In addition to his mathematical research, he also studies the history of African and Afro-descendant music with an emphasis on the ongoing musical dialogues and exchanges throught the African diaspora. Dr. Montes Pizarro is also a founder member of the Colectivo de estudios musicales de Puerto Rico”. His book “Más ramas que raíces: diálogos musicales entre el Caribe y el continente africano” (“More branches than roots: Musical dialogues between the Caribbean and the African continent”, Ediciones Callejón, 2018, and Editorial Wanáfrica, Spain, 2023) won the first prize for national literature 2018 in the research category awarded by the Institute of Puerto Rican Literature. Since October 2001, he has produced the program Rumba Africana for Radio Universidad de Puerto Rico which is also broacasted in México, Colombia and the online radio station Música Maestro Radio.
